Graffiti isn't simple vandalism; it's an artistic expression employed around the world. Filmmaker Jon Reiss travels five continents to reveal graffiti's history, cultural impact and social relevance. Noted artists share their stories, bringing this vital form of expression out of the shadows. It's on freeway overpasses, buildings and billboards. Now, see the real meaning of the world's graffiti.
The film-maker travelled all over the world, documenting the extreme diversity of styles, attitudes and cultures involved in the creation of graffiti. Having seen only the local graffiti in Los Angeles in no way prepared me for the wildly differing graffiti "scenes" that exist in Asia, Europe, South America and Africa. The opening segments detailing the early history of tagging in the US was a real eye opener. Very violent and scary. It is amazing that this eventually led to the quasi-art form that exists in practically every corner of the world today. See this film if you want to understand why surfaces keep getting marked up all around you.
