Joseph Stalin's reign of terror in Soviet Russia from 1929 to 1953, a dark period in the nation's history in which he ruthlessly pursued a policy of 'collectivisation', confiscating privately owned land and forcing peasants to work on massive state-controlled farms. Any sign of resistance was heavily punished as labour camps began to spring up in more remote parts of the country and millions died from starvation and persecution.
