Description

Lord Kitchener's famous call-up inspires Britons to volunteer in their millions, while women work hard in munitions factories, preparing bullets and shells. The programme also traces the infamous Battle of the Somme, whose first day became the worst in British military history, as 19,000 troops were killed and another 40,000 wounded.
