“Can You Imagine?” is a compelling documentary by Canadian filmmaker Boris Malagurski, shedding light on the plight of the Serbs living in Kosovo and the alarming lack of human rights they endure in the 21st century.

The film exposes the harsh reality faced by Kosovo Serbs, who have been subjected to ethnic cleansing by the majority Albanian population. Since 1999, when Kosovo came under UN administration following NATO’s intervention to halt ethnic Albanian separatism, many Serbs have been forcibly expelled from their homes, abducted, and killed. Their cultural and religious sites have been systematically targeted and destroyed, leaving behind a landscape of devastation.

For the Serbs, Kosovo holds immense significance akin to Jerusalem for the Jewish people, serving as the cradle of their statehood, culture, and religion. The region is home to numerous Serbian Christian Orthodox monasteries, which are integral to their spiritual and historical heritage. However, despite this deep connection, Kosovo Serbs continue to face persecution and displacement, living in cramped container camps and ghettos within Europe’s heart.

Through personal accounts and testimonies, the documentary portrays the heartbreaking stories of individuals who have fallen victim to nationalist and irredentist ideologies, aimed at establishing a homogenous Albanian state in Kosovo. The film unveils the daily atrocities endured by Kosovo Serbs and highlights the alarming absence of basic human rights in their lives.

“Can You Imagine?” serves as a powerful reminder of the ongoing struggles faced by Kosovo Serbs and calls for greater awareness and action to address the injustices they endure in their own homeland.
