Stretching only 43 kilometers in length and 10 kilometers in width, Gaza is primarily inhabited by refugees who have lived in camps since 1948. Since the start of the second Palestinian uprising, known as the second Intifada, in September 2000, none of Gaza’s 40,000 day laborers have been able to cross into Israel. The border checkpoint remains closed to all goods and medical supplies from Israel and the West Bank. Local residents of Gaza bear the brunt of Israel’s efforts to suppress the uprising, with 135 Palestinian children under the age of 15 killed by Israeli soldiers, often for throwing stones near Israeli settlements. This episode of “Life” focuses on Reyidh, Sabah, and their children, a single refugee family struggling to survive amidst these challenges.
