The bombing of the American naval base at Pearl Harbor plunged 9-year-old Minoru Fukushima into a world of virulent racism, leading to his family’s displacement from Canada, their home country. Alongside thousands of other Japanese Canadians, Minoru and his family faced discrimination and were labeled as enemies of the state. They were relocated to internment camps in British Columbia before being deported to Japan.
Directed by Michael Fukushima, Minoru’s son, this film blends classical animation with archival footage to tell a poignant story. Through the memories of the father and the voice of the son, viewers are immersed in a narrative of lost heritage and eventual reconciliation.
