The once-promising nation of Sudan, hailed as the beacon of hope for harmonious coexistence between Arab and African, Muslim and Christian, now stands fractured, with the dream of unity all but shattered.
The recent referendum on southern secession has laid bare Sudan’s deep divisions, signaling the likelihood of further fragmentation beyond the north-south divide. Separatist movements in regions like Darfur and the Nuba Mountains closely monitor these developments, contemplating their own bids for independence, whether through peaceful means or armed struggle.
During my journey to Sudan to create the film, I encountered the warmth and hospitality of the northern Sudanese people firsthand. Despite facing challenges, such as a breakdown of our hired car in Khartoum, locals readily offered assistance without seeking any form of compensation. This spirit of generosity and helpfulness was a recurring theme throughout our stay.
However, amidst this warmth, I also encountered a pervasive sense of denial. Many individuals I spoke with expressed a desperate desire to believe that Sudan’s unity could still be salvaged, clinging to hope that the South would not ultimately secede. Unfortunately, the reality is stark: the South will indeed break away from the union.
