“The Last Call” tells the poignant story of a family grappling with the devastating impact of New York City’s COVID-19 outbreak, shedding light on how the highly infectious disease has profoundly altered the way loved ones connect and bid farewell.
The narrative unfolds as illness strikes multiple members of Jessica Caro’s family during the early stages of the pandemic. It begins with her daughter falling ill with a fever, followed by her aunt being rushed to the hospital. As the virus spreads within their household, Jessica and her mother find solace in each other’s company, offering support and consolation through phone calls and text messages. However, their ordeal takes a tragic turn when Jessica’s mother also succumbs to the illness, her condition worsening with the onset of a persistent cough.
“The Last Call,” a collaboration between FRONTLINE and The New Yorker, emerges from the reporting conducted for FRONTLINE’s documentary “The Virus: What Went Wrong,” scheduled for premiere on Tuesday, June 16th.
